BEHAVIOR ASPECTS OF MALARIA IN JLADRI VILLAGE, KEBUMEN REGENCY

Abstract


Jladri Village was one of an endemic area of malaria in Kebumen Regency that had increasing
case during 2006-2008. The objectives of this study were to determine demographic
characteristic, respondents knowledge, attitude and practices towards malaria. The study was
undertaken as a descriptive cross-sectional survey in Jladri Village in April-December 2008.
Fifty (50) respondents that ever had malaria were interviewed using a structured questionnaire.
The results showed that 52% of respondents known malaria as a serious disease but only 54,17%
of whom correctly associated it with mosquito bites. Knowledge of vector and vector control was
low. Treatment-seeking intention at the health facility was high (94%) but 46% never had
malaria treatment. Survey data showed that respondents had positive attitude for using bed net to
reduce malaria. Daily activities of respondents in outside in the afternoon and mobility to
endemic area were increasing contact with vector. The study revealed that community
knowledge of malaria vector and vector control required attention. Health promotion about
vector control and vector behavior and information about compliance of malaria drug treatments
could be recommended.

Desa Jladri merupakan salah satu daerah endemis malaria di Kabupaten Kebumen yang memiliki
peningkatan kasus antara Tahun 2006-2008. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan karakter
demografi, pengetahuan, sikap dan praktck responden tentang malaria. Penelitian ini
menggunakan metode cross sectional yang dilakukan di Desa Jladri pada April-Desember 2008.
Sebanyak 50 responden yang pernah sakit malaria diwawancarai menggunakan kuesioner
terstruktur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 52% responden mengetahui malaria sebagai penyakit
serius namun hanya 54,17% yang menghubungkannya dengan gigitan nyamuk. Pcngctahuan
tentang vektor dan pengendaliannya masih rendah. Sebanyak 58,0% responden mendukung
pemberantasan malaria melalui kerjasama pemerintah dan masyarakat. Upaya pengobatan di
tenaga kesehatan cukup tinggi (84%) tetapi 46% penderita tidak pernah minum obat malaria.
Responden menunjukkan sikap positif terhadap penggunaan kelambu untuk mengurangi malaria.
Sebanyak 76,0% melakukan aktivitas di luar rumah saat sore/malam hari dan 82,0% tidak pernah
menutup lubang ventilasi dengan kawat anti nyamuk. Aktivitas harian di luar rumah saat soremalam
hari dan mobilitas ke daerah endemis meningkatkan kontak dengan vektor. Kesimpulan
studi adalah pengetahuan tentang vektor malaria dan pengendaliannya masih memerlukan
peningkatan. Promosi kesehatan dapat direkomendasikan untuk informasi mengenai perilaku dan
pengendalian vektor disertai informasi tentang kepatuhan minum obat malaria.
